Extinct volcaninc cones, winegrowing hillsides, woods, rustling reeds, rippling Balaton.

This is how Szigliget and its vicinity could be described. This is where the 730-year-old castle appears on high, which was built by the abbacy of Pannonhalma in 1262. Today the castle functions as a tourist attraction.

The view of the surrounding remnant hills of volcanic origin offers a great experience to all visitors.

However, a number of further scenic spots wait to be explored by the hikers.

The Esterházy mansion was one of these, being a writers’ retreat today, and the 12-acre protected arboretum belonging to it is still open to the public. In addition, the old castle on the „Queen’s skirt” is also worth mentioning, but the old village scattered with thatched houses should not be missed either.

Taking a walk around here we can feel as if we went back centuries in time, and we can also find further program opportunities, such as the handwork yard, the Castle gallery, the Peasant house, and certainly the 250-year-old Esterházy Pince, awaiting the visitors with folklore programmes.

Regular boat service to Keszthely and Badacsony is available at the harbour.

Beside the beautiful landscape and historic atmosphere, Szigliget provides tranquillity, a chance of calm recreation to the visiting guests.

The poet, Kisfaludy Sándor wrote about this landscape with great enthusiasm:
